DVD RELEASE PARTY:
RideOn
| Montara, CA |
 |
On the heels of Maverick's opening ceremony Sun Nov 1,
Powerlines Productions invites you to their film screening &
DVD release party of "Ride On," a progressive big-wave surf
documentary that brings you into the minds and lives of
surfers as they search for the largest rideable waves in the
Pacific. Happy bar menu all night long, plus $4
Peruvian beers, $4 bottled beers, $5 pisco sours.
Produced by Curt Myers, Chris Wilson and Eric Nelson, "Ride
On" documents the arrival of the deadliest swell in decades,
as surfers are left with a decision: surf Mavericks, with
waves that many have compared to "100-Foot Wednesday", or
Pescadero Point (aka Ghost Tree), a spot that now faces a
ban on tow-in surfing on its biggest days. The film also
includes footage from the fabled Nov. 29-30 swell that elite
surfers are calling "the best paddle swell at Mavericks."
Includes footage of Alaska’s glacier produced waves,
beach-break perfection in Mexico, Puerto Escondido’s
historic monster swell at and the worst wipeout ever
witnessed at Mavericks. Featured surfers include many of the
regular Mavericks crew. |

FILM: TGR's
RE:SESSION
| San
Francisco |
|
OK, it's not a surf film, but it's a great way to get
psyched for winter's frozen waves. Catch TGR's newest 16MM
and HD ski and snowboard film as its tour stops in SF.
Per TGR,
"This
project takes viewers beyond the traditional ski and
snowboard movie into a revolutionary realm of action sports
entertainment. Shot on both film and RED ONE high definition
camera technology, Re: Session documents the true wealth of
the mountain experience. Follow the crew as they score in
one of Alagna, Italy's deepest seasons on record. Check out
forbidden powder in Poland, massive wedges in Colorado, new
gap jumps in Utah, and seven weeks of epic riding conditions
in Alaska." With an all-star cast of ski & snowboard
pros and TGR regulars. |

An outta-hand
night of "Rockabilly! Punk! Garage! Surf!" with The
Mighty Slim Pickens, The Meat Sluts, and The Aquamen.
For more vivid descriptions of the bands, go
here.
The Mighty Slim Pickins...are an SF-based
self-proclaimed "what-the-f*!@k-abilly" band. Blending
vintage country, rockabilly and punk, this all-female outfit
is a little bit heartache, a little bit hardcore and a whole
lotta camp....The
Meat Sluts -
Time to punk'n' roll with
members of the Womentors, Double D's, Lost Puppy and
EX-members of Loudmouths, McCools, among others... and
The Aquamen are best described as a crew who "staggers
around stage in suits, striking metal poses, yowling in
staccato outbursts. The band's unique blend of spastic surf
"intoxica" channels the spirits of the Jon Spencer Blues
Explosion, Man ... or Astroman? and Dean Martin in a boozy
seance." --San Jose Metro |

This is final stop on the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series 2009 where the

reigning 2008 Champion Nat Young are current and former ASP World Tour
stalwarts Jordy Smith, Timmy Reyes, Roy Powers, Cory Lopez and Adriano de
Souza, current top American WQS leader Brett Simpson, current ASP World

By the way, Jason ‘Ratboy’ Collins is this year's

o
"The
Cove"
Deemed “a certain Oscar nominee” by acclaimed film critic
Roger Ebert. See synopsis below
about the heart-wrenching dolphin documentary + additional November SF screening dates. Or read
this
Salon.com interview with the filmmakers. |
| |
o "Lost
Prophets"
a new surf film with Dave Rastovich, Hans Hagen, Chris Del
Moro & Reef Macintosh. "Lost Prophets-Search
for the Collective" is an adventure documentary that follows
nine surfers in different aspects of life, from a renegade
canyon dweller to devout West Javanese Muslim.
Narrated by legendary oddball Tom Morey, the film delves into different
aspects of surfing, all the while centered around the
Indonesia surf escape. Some people live life asleep,
only dreaming their awake. Amongst the unstoppable trend of
surf globalization there are certain individuals who have
found a way of waking up. The film portrays a vivid picture
of lives intertwined by adventure, balance, dedication and
connection and thus, bridging generations. |
| |
o "All
Points South"
Best Short Film Award Winner, New York Surf Film Festival;
this surf-activism film by Save The Waves' Josh Berry and
filmmaker Sachi Cunningham exposes Southern Chile's pulp
mill pollution problem, how surfers and fishermen are
fighting against the forestry industry.
|
| |
o "Devils
Teeth"
Roger Teich's short film about Ron Elliot, the only urchin
diver to frequent the Great White Shark-infested waters of
the Farallon Islands.

"This devastating and highly engaging documentary
about the ‘dolphin trade’ by one-time dolphin

ovations at Sundance and is likely to change what
you think about humanity's relationship to the

raises troubling questions about how badly we have

FILM: The Drifter
| San
Francisco |
|
This
evening features an acoustic set with Machado and Jon Swift,
a full-length showing of the film and a Q&A with Rob and
Taylor Steele!
Surf icon
Rob Machado
is the central
focus of acclaimed surf filmmaker Taylor Steele’s latest
movie. Steele captures Machado’s soul-searching
journeys through the Indonesian islands. Winner of "Best
Film" at Bali's Ombak
International Surf Film Festival earlier this fall, much of the dialogue in The Drifter is taken from Machado's
own personal journals. According to respected surf
journalist Nathan Myers, who co-wrote the movie, there is
nothing embellished in Machado's candid, heart-felt
passages. It is these passages, in fact, that drive the
movie, from Machado's epiphany in Bali, to his ill-fated
motorcycle purchase, to his decision to delay his return to
California, blindly pick a new island on the map, and just
go.
Jakarta Post said it well:
"Capturing the journey of the surfer through a different
land, culture and waves, The Drifter is a visual metaphor
for a free spirit's conscious abandonment of the worldly
traps of modern life as he searches for the inner freedom
and spiritual joy offered by a life of renunciation."
This is a Poor Specimen production. |

SEA LIFE ART EXHIBIT | Pacific Beach, CA (SOCAL) |
 |
If you missed the 10/24 opening reception, the SoCal surf art gallery, Surfindian,
has its newest art
show "Sea Life," on display
through November 30th. It features art,
photography, music and surfboards from 5 female
artists,
Julie Cox,
Elizabeth Pepin,
Serena Mitnik-Miller,
Ashley Lloyd and Nicole Grodesky.
Enjoy some great ocean-inspired art!
The exhibition highlights the artistic inspiration
from all five California-based women whose
expressions originate from their interaction with
the ocean – an element that has worked into every
aspect of their daily lives. The women, all avid
surfers themselves, employ a variety of mediums,
from painting to photography to surfboard shaping to
create a unique and diverse body of work. For
more, check out the
Sea Life Press Release. |
