This is one heckuva San Diego County event for surfboard aficionados…don’t miss the all-star lineup of 100+ shapers and exhibitors at the third annual Del Mar Sacred Craft Surf Expo.  From Bing Copeland to Dick Brewer.  Fun events include live shaping demos and Vintage Surfboard Antique Road Show, where if you bring in your vintage board, expert appraisers can determine its estimated value. 

The expo kicks off Saturday AM at the Del Mar’s 15th St. Reef where the general surfing public is invited to try out boards & from Sacred Craft exhibitors.  At the Expo, musicians like Ausie longboard champion Beau Young, Miles Kinney & Tower 7 will perform all day, along with FiveAlive, a YardBirds cover band; the acoustic stylings of Kevin White; and Future Fins brand ambassador Phil 'Boo' Stubbs.  A film screening of "SEARCHING FOR MICHAEL PETERSON" will also premier later that day. 

Additionally, Sacred Craft seminars run all weekend long, including Drew Brophy's inspirational slide show and spray paint demonstration; an epoxy laminating demonstration by Dave Daum; UCSD's Stephanie Moyerman discusses feminine physique and surfboard design for women; Lee Vanderhurst professes on surfboard design 101 during "The Idiot's Guide to Surfboard Design". A Multi-media and hands-on guide to the basics in surfboard design from outline to rocker, how to measure it and what it does. Know how your surfboard should work before you catch your first wave; UCSD's Benjamin Thomson talks about natural frequency (recoil rate) of a surfboard and why it is important to you!; Whitney Guild will present Turn Up The Volume! and discuss the importance of knowing the volume of each of the surfboards in your quiver. VOLUME is rarely discussed, but is an important single number that can be used to describe each of your boards; and the Groundswell Society discusses apex predators and their role in surfboard design.

Get your oyster fix at Surfrider San Mateo County's OysterFest and support their Blue Water Task Force.  Since 1999, Surfrider Foundation San Mateo County (SMC) chapter has been acting locally monitor water quality within San Mateo County and its coastline. Every Friday morning, Surfrider SMC tests 5 sites: Rockaway, north and south Linda Mar, Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, and Surfer's Beach. Results are posted every Saturday morning via Twitter.

Head out to a Surf Music Extravaganza this Sunday October 18th from 3-7pm at Milk Bar with Drifting Sand, other killer local surf bands: The Twang Tens, The Reefriders and Robbie Allen And The Outer Edge.  Plus DJ Otto of Tiki News will be spinning the kool tiki tunes in between bands!

Join the San Mateo County Chapter of Surfrider Foundation for our community meeting on Thursday, October 22 at 7pm at Sam’s Chowder House in Half Moon Bay. Learn about and discuss the threats to the wave and beach at Princeton Jetty (a.k.a. Surfer’s Beach), such as harbor sedimentation and coastal erosion, and we’ll also hear about the County’s efforts to improve facilities, amenities and the coastal path nearby. The discussion will feature input from Harbormaster Peter Grenell, surfer and coastal engineer Bob Battalio, County Park Director David Holland, and of course community members like you!

Cost: FREE, but please show some love to Sam’s Chowder House for sponsoring the meeting venue by buying some drinks and grub.

Catch the screening of "Jack Johnson en Concert" on the big screen. In the summer of 2008 Jack Johnson took a trip through Europe playing everywhere from historical venues to classic outdoor stages making it the biggest tour of his career. The film is a collection of live performances with Jack’s quartet along with special appearances by G. Love, Ben Harper, Mason Jennings, Neil Halstead and Matt Costa. 

The SoCal surf art gallery, Surfindian, invites you to the Saturday 10/24 opening reception of its art show "Sea Life,"  featuring art, photography, music and surfboards from 5 female artists, Julie Cox, Elizabeth Pepin, Serena Mitnik-Miller, Ashley Lloyd and Nicole Grodesky.  Enjoy some great ocean-inspired art, wine, and live music by Olivia Rohde.

The exhibition highlights the artistic inspiration from all five California-based women whose expressions originate from their interaction with the ocean – an element that has worked into every aspect of their daily lives. The women, all avid surfers themselves, employ a variety of mediums, from painting to photography to surfboard shaping to create a unique and diverse body of work.  For more, check out the Sea Life Press Release

Join SF Surfrider for its regular beach clean-up every 2 weeks at 10am on Sundays. All cleanup gear is supplied -- just show up!  Prior to heading out, check their events calendar for any last-minute changes. Rain cancels any planned cleanups.
