UPDATE:  SURF MOVIE & HOLIDAY MADNESS on WED 12/5
Ah, come out tonight for our Annual bash to usher in the big wave season! 

Be careful out there with the big swell.  While local female Mavs surfers like Jamilah Star  (recent Mom with a 6-week old) and Jenny Useldinger were tearing it up in Waimea, it was rough to hear about the Ghost Tree tragedy and Peter Davi.

By the way, the Mavericks Surf Contest's opening ceremonies is this Friday, December 7 at 2pm.  The waiting period runs from that day through March 31st, so be sure to sign up for e-mail alerts on their site.  Better yet, catch local Mavs surfers out there on any big day

Long-time residents also noted that OB's shores were "the cleanest they've seen in a long time."  We're also excited to see there's progress on myco-remediation -- that is, using oyster mushrooms to transform the oil we've helped collect into natural compost.

    Opening film:  Carving (12 mins)
    Roberto Vezzonne's short film focuses on San Francisco shaper Danny Hess, who uses unique techniques to shape beautiful fishes and other boards out of wood and other sustainable materials.  The Malloy brothers and Ocean Beach locals have nothing but high praise for his art, along with the high performance & speed that Hess surfboards deliver.  The waiting list is now over 9 months.

    Roberto, a Brazilian native who's lived in California since 1997, is an alum of the Academy Of Art.  He produces narratives, commercial films and sports documentaries -- primarily on surfing, skateboarding and capoeira -- the Brazilian martial art.

    "The Lost Wave: An African Surf Story" chronicles the surf expedition of Sam George --     writer of the hit documentary RIDING GIANTS, former editor of Surfer Magazine, and longtime surf explorer --  to Sao Tome, a remote West African island nation with a tortured past of slavery and colonial abandonment. Along with pro surfers Holly Beck and Joe Curren, they seek to add a new chapter to surfing's historical roots, as they share waves with local villagers riding hard-carved wooden boards --"goffes," which they have done for generations, untouched by the surf culture of the outside world.

    The Lost Wave is also a moving, highly personal journey for George, who looks to recapture the passion for the sport that has defined his life.  George grew up surfing in San Francisco, and noted that he is, at heart, "a Kelly's Cove guy."

    The film won the Audience Award at the 2007 Malibu Film Festival.     The film is narrated by Sal Masekela, (X Games anchor, E! reporter, and star of "Surfs Up") and was shot entirely in high definition.  It features indigenous Sao Tome music as well as a lush, all-original score. The LOST WAVE was produced by filmmaker and action sports producer Paul Taublieb of Malibu, CA-based Media X International, Inc, along with Rush HD and MXi.
