Another Successful WOMEN ON WAVES Event!

Thank you for joining us at our recent Women On Waves (WOW) Longboard Surf Fest, the longest running women's surf contest in California. The 10th annual women's surf celebration went off successfully on Saturday, April 8, 2006 in Capitola.

According to head organizer, Sally Smith, "It was such a great day.  We weren't let down in anyway -- 100+ contestants, good fun waves, good weather, good vibes... plus, I believe record funds were raised for our local non-profits like WomenCare (we're still tallying).  Everyone went away stoked!  I think there were more spectators this year than ever before -- probably had something to do with the sunshine after many days of rain."

With the fun wave conditions, the crowds kept Surftech busy with the high volume of demo boards being checked out.  Many spectators simply basked in the warm sun and bought raffle tickets galore to win the eight highly coveted surfboards and prizes being given away all day.

The WOW fest came to an end at Zelda's with cocktails, a lively awards dinner banquet, Surftech board auction, and music from Ashley Lloyd Situation.  With Siren/Surftech Team Rider Kristy Murphy at the helm as emcee, auctioneer and "evangelist," the evening's upbeat energy and rollicking laughter never faltered.  We look forward to having this fast-talkin', highly entertaining World Longboard champ and more top women pros headlining WOW next year.

See you in April 2007!

A NOTE of THANKS FROM SALLY SMITH

We'd like thank to Katin, Gallaz, Las Olas and Hoodlamb Hemp Jackets, who all donated product just a few days before the contest and didn't make the program.  A huge thanks also goes to:

  • Surftech and Duke Brouwer for their help with boards and bringing Kristy Murphy to WOW.

  • Hotline for kicking down the awesome wetsuits for all the first place winners...

  • Julie and Ed @ Toyota of Santa Cruz and Joe @ Scion of Santa Cruz for showing off their cool new vehicles and all the giveaways - so many spectators wore the Scion rashies and/or beanies

  • My husband Doug Weymouth for printing all the shirts and hoody sweatshirts; sacrificing all sleep the night before the contest to ensure the programs were printed; and for his unbelievable energy in posting the scores all day and hosting the awards dinner afterwards.  He really is my hero!

  • Candy, Nipper, Kim, and all the Amigas and others who stepped up to volunteer at the check-in booth and raffle ticket booth.

  • Keith Bridges and all the Judges for the great job they did and for staying all day!

  • Jolie & Kathy - What an awesome tabulating team! Tabulating is probably one of the most thankless contest jobs.  Thank you for volunteering for this year (without asking!) and the last WOW.
