SURF MOVIE NIGHT | SEPTEMBER  FEATURE
North Shore, (1987) | Rating: PG |  view trailer

The movie's tagline is "The Peak, The Dream, The Ultimate Test"...Rick Kane (Matt Adler), the 18-year-old wave tank surfing champion from Arizona, tries to fulfill his ultimate dream of riding the perilous waves of Hawaii's legendary North Shore.

It's a classic story of invasion by the mainland "Towheads" vs. the "da Hui" locals.  Kane
has neither the skills nor the attitude to survive the North Shore.  He fortuitously meets mystical surfer Chandler (Gregory Harrison), who teaches him the difference between 'soul surfers' and those who surf for fame and money. He also finds the beautiful Kiani (Nia Peeples), who shows him how to survive, and a challenge unlike any other. Turtle, the surfer played by John Philbin (who also starred in Point Break and taught Blue Crush's Kate Bosworth to surf), has all the best comedic lines.
Starring: Matt Adler, Gregory Harrison, Nia Peeples, John Philbin, and Gerry Lopez. With appearances by surfers Shaun Tompson, Derek Ho, Laird Hamilton, Mark Occhilupo, Ken Bradshaw, Mark Foo, and Christian Fletcher.  Director: William Phelps.  Entertaining Reviews:  1 | 2 | Goofs

Memorable Quotes:

Tur
tle: Stay loose, haole.
Rick:   What's a haole?
Turtle: A tourist, a mainlander, like you.
Rick:   I'm not a tourist.
Turtle: Whatever, Barney.
Rick:   What's a Barney?
Turtle: It's like Barno... Barnyard... a haole to the max, a kook in and out of the water. Yeah?

Turtle: (to Rick) "I can tell you're a pretty lame surfer by the way you wear your shorts"

One Winter Story, the documentary by Sally Lundburg and San Francisco’s Elizabeth Pepin of Frank Films, chronicles the life of big wave surf pioneer, Sarah Gerhardt, the first woman to surf Mavericks. Sarah’s journey to Maverick’s was anything but easy. Surfing became her escape from the hardships of home, and faith became the guiding force in her life.  The film’s world premiere takes place October 8 & 9, 2006, at the Mill Valley Film festival   Tickets go on sale on the MVFF website on Sunday, Sept 17 at  www.mvff.com.  More on the film: press release.
