Introducing the Gaviotta- Now at UGGAustralia.com

UPDATE ON THE PACIFIC OCEAN GARBAGE PATCH:

Many of us have heard about the Pacific Ocean’s Garbage Patch, or Plastic Vortex, the immense area of floating plastic garbage that stretches for hundreds of square miles northwest of Hawaii.  Discovered about ten years ago, scientists had very little data about this remote ocean area, until now.  Enter Project Kaisei -- whose co-founders include San Francisco surfer/activist and former Surfer Magazine editor, George Orbelian.  The non-profit Kaisei teamed up with USCD’s Scripps Institute of Oceanography and recently sent two ships in August to study the Patch, with the goal of helping find solutions to deal with marine debris and to better understand plastic's toxicity impact on ocean life -- plankton, the food chain, fish, sea birds, whales and more.

After 22 days of intensive research, testing and collection in the Patch, one of the ships, the SV Kaisei, is on its way back to San Francisco with plastics samples, from ultra-fine to very large. According to Kaisei's Ryan Yerkey, of particular concern was a collection of sea jellies that were ingesting confetti-sized particles of plastic in a pail of seawater literally bubbling with activity.   Upon the ship's return, the materials collected will undergo extensive lab testing and analysis, and whose results will provide Project Kaisei with some answers to the debris' impact as well as new directions to detoxify and recycle these materials into diesel fuel.

On August 31, the SV Kaisei will pass under the Golden Gate Bridge around 11:30am PST.   Stay tuned for the September 1 press event presenting their initial findings.  We wanted to put the word out that Project Kaisei is already planning next year's mission and needs your support.  They welcome donations, which will be used for raising awareness and bringing solutions to the issues of marine debris.  For more info and to track Kaisei’s progress, visit www.projectkaisei.org.

SURF FLIX
We're debuting our new "Surf Flix" section with some recent reviews by our new film editor, Max Tom, who incidentally won one of our recent film ticket giveaways...Stay tuned for more surf film news.

Dear & Yonder

Max's Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars)

It was great to see that Dear and Yonder's outdoor SF screening was very well attended at the Potrero Skate Park -- perhaps 300-400 people.  The park was filled and lined on the hill...

What's enjoyable about this film is its good surf footage showcasing a wide range of female surf and watersports experience.  Shortboard rippers Coco Ho & her contemporaries showcase the latest maneuvers in women’s surfing.  Longboarder Kassia Meador and friends demonstrate you don’t have to ride a shortboard to surf, as they noseride logs and fishes in Mexico. There's cool footage of the voyage of Liz Clark on her boat as she sails solo around the world and skateboarding girls show off skate tricks on land.  But the coolest maneuver has to go to San Francisco’s own bodysurfer, Judith Sheridan.  To see her mix it up in the lineup at Mavericks sans board is shocking.  Included in the groovy soundtrack is Feist, among others, making this film a refreshing divergence from other offerings in the surf genre.

Trailer | Catch it next:  Sept 19th in Oceanside |  DVD not available yet

Life As A Movie

Max's Rating: (4.0 out of 5 stars)

Excellent film. Top notch surfers, snowboarders and skaters mixing it up provides a fresh approach to surf movies.  See Tony Hawk surf indoor Japan wave pool.  Jack Johnson shreds.  Snowboard wipeouts always entertain. There's plenty of Indo tube time.  Also, the camera work is excellent, with crisp and clear images with good water footage.  Yadin Nichol scores insane tube, the ride of the movie.  This film is definitely worth a viewing...and worth a purchase especially if they add good extras on the DVD and include an action-only version.

Drive-Thru Australia 2

Max's Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars)

It was a fun outdoor screening night behind Aqua Surf Shop.  Turnout was about 80 folks...

The appeal of Drive Thru is not to see the best surfers on the best waves, but to see the best surfers on their worst days.  The Drive Thru series is the reality show sitcom of the surfing world.  Witness top notch professional surfers hung-over, sleep-deprived, groggy, and grouchy, stuffed into two RVs for 2 weeks.  Amidst the wild adventures and misadventures, they still rip into sloppy, choppy, junky waves -- in other words, the kind of waves you and I surf everyday.   Even veteran professional surfers of 22 years put their wetsuits on backwards sometimes, and I mean all the way up to the neck.  All in all, they're still living the dream.  This film makes you want to jam into an RV with Occy and Donovan and go anywhere.

Trailer | Where to Buy ($27.95)

TK8 - Last Ride

Max's Rating: (3.0 out of 5 stars)

Josh Pomer's last film is pure Californian surf porn.  See your favorite California surfers rip in wetsuits, booties and cold water.  Featured waves include Rincon, Sandspit and the Lane.  Most of the footage is shot from land with a stationary video camera. If you liked TK7, you’ll like TK8.

As for the TK8 The Tom Curren Experience -- a modern day silent surf movie with live groovy music provided by Tom Curren -- that garners a 4-star rating.   Tom played guitar, jammed and sang accompanied by bongo drums and tambourine to score the movie at the Victoria Theater in San Francisco.  The promised rock band was M.I.A., though.  Surf schwag giveaways and board raffle are always good fun.

Trailer | DVD not available yet

Zuna Surf Flix editor Max Tom:

Max Tom is an SF Bay area resident, surf film fanatic and shortboarder who has logged hundreds and hundreds of hours viewing surf movies.

His favorites include Quiksilver's Young Guns series and surf documentaries like Bustin' Down the Door (available in DVD  and as video-on-demand for $3.99).
