Ola Chica Product Testing Session...

Santa Cruz's Aylana Zanville at Lance's Left, Mentawai

INDIAN SUMMER...

Oi!  Greetings from Southern Brazil! We're bummed that we're missing the Bay Area's Indian Summer, but we aren't complaining about the fresh papaya, coconut, mangos and acai down here.

There's a slew of great October events -- swap meets, photographer Bob Barbour's Open Studio,  films on sharks and "Searching for Michael Peterson,"  many surf contests including this weekend's Women on Waves and more...and if you're in Healdsburg, head to the Mavericks bash at Longboard Vineyards featuring the new Peter Mel wine.  Check'em all out below.

By the way, our newsletter has a new shorter look. We've ported some content and the Surf Contest Calendar over to our growing website.  Also, for last minute event submissions and updates, they will now get posted on ZunaSurf.com's "Upcoming Events" area, since our e-newsletter only goes out 1-2 times a month.  SO,  start checking ZunaSurf.com regularly.

Bob Barbour, the former Surfing Magazine masthead photographer, hosts his annual Open Studios event in Santa Cruz over 2 weekends in October.  Barbour is known best for helping "break" Mavericks publicly and capturing defining moments like the infamous 1994 Mavericks "WipeOut of the Decade" image of 16-year-old Jay Moriarity.   We Zuna Surf editors have always had a great time lingering in Barbour’s beautiful backyard and studio, immersing ourselves in three decades of his images.  Check out beautiful waves, classic Woodie cars, historic North Shore moments, and stunning shots of big wave pioneer Margo Oberg and other icons, including Santa Cruz’s own Adam Repogle, Darryl "Flea" Virostko, Richard Schmidt and Terry Simms.   (Editors’ note – copies of Barbour’s most famous surf images are available for purchase in a variety of sizes and price ranges, and he does all the custom framing and matting himself).

Searching for Michael Peterson, directed by Jolyon Hoff, is a documentary telling the moving story of one of Australia's greatest surfers whose career was cut short by mental illness. For five glorious years "MP" led the Coolangatta Kids and won virtually every event he contested, including three Bells Beach Pros back to back. His brilliant, aggressive surfing provided the centrepiece for Albert Falzon's Morning of the Earth in 1972, and MP never looked back. His final tour victory, at the inaugural Stubbies Pro at Burleigh Heads in 1977, is regarded as the high point of the early professional era. Sadly, a year later triumph turned to tragedy and Michael's demons claimed him.

In 1983 he was locked up after a 15-car police chase across Queensland and finally diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. He never surfed again.

Thirty years on, MP is still vitally interested in the sport and culture of surfing and is a fixture at most Queensland events, enjoying the action with his mother, Joan. He is rightly regarded as an iconic figure in Australian surfing, and Hoff's film, while it pulls no punches, is an intensely moving tribute to the man.
