"These two photos were taken during the
Junior Women's division during the Women on
Waves contest's very first heat. This initial heat was rather exciting,
given the waves were breaking at Capitola's first jetty, second jetty, and Toes
-- no one was sure where they were going to consistently set up.
Early on, a solidly good wave began reeling off
first jetty, and local 'Tola gromette, Lexi Hinn, caught it sitting
deep and raced down the line. It was also cool to capture Sierra
Partridge's smooth style as she cross-stepped her way into the sunrise. Sure,
the water was brackish and a bit brown, but with much-need fun surf and sun
after record weeks of rain, who could complain?"

note
Sorry we had to
skip our earlier April issue...Instead of Brazil, we had a last minute trip to
Beijing right after the Women On Waves contest. It was a bummer that we
didn't have time to head out to Hainan and test out the waves there...Ah, we
hope the rains have slowed down...Looking ahead, May is packed with surf
events...

WOMEN ON WAVES RECAP
The Women on Waves contest earlier this April was a fun festival -- record
spectator turnout, a hoard of boards given away and 100 women competitors
putting on a fine show in some decent waves. Recent world longboard champ
and Siren/Surftech team rider Kristy Murphy, along a few other pros spiced
things up in the expression session with some tandem-riding hijinks and
more...Check out results, photos and more
here.
BIG STICK
LOGJAM RECAP
Congrats to Woody Robinson, Terry Simms (who also
won the Hot Dogger Logger award for highest overall score), Anthony
Daddario, EJ, Ashley Lloyd, Jane McKenzie and others for their top finishes in the vintage
boards, no-cords contest this past weekend. Big Stick Surf Check results & photos
here. Missed
seeing Joel Tudor? He was there but didn't compete...check his art show
here.
LOCALS IN THE MEDIA...
If you missed the April issue of San Francisco Magazine, there's a good
article on the low-key vie of the Mollusk Surf Shop crew...And while we killing
time in airports this month, we perused a piece by Dan Duane, author of
"Caught Inside," who stirs it up a little in April's Men's Journal by
writing about his day pass with the heavy locals at "surfing's most notoriously
exclusive destinations, Steamer Lane." We must say,
given the Men's Journal's core audience, it's
been
entertaining to check out their 'surfing-lite' fare, as well as its
portrayal of the surf scene and folks like Laird Hamilton....
Julie Cox
appears on this month's
Athleta catalog
cover and throughout the pages, along with
Ashley Lloyd. The two ladies were down Punta Mita
Mexico with the Las Olas crew and was recruited to be in shoot...Congrats to
Paradise Team Rider Jamilah Star
who won the
Billabong XXL Girl's Best Performance Award and $5000 for the second year in
a row. Santa Cruz’s JamStar's paddle-in efforts at Mavericks and Waimea Bay
bested Hawaiian Keala Kennelly's shocking Tahiti tow-in tube ride by a single
ballot. View Powerline Production's
Mavs video clip of JamStar and the Surfline
write-up.
See you in the waves,
