  A Packed Summer Lineup...

No, you haven't missed any July-August Zuna Surf newsletters.  While that sweet SW swell rolled in, we were traveling on the East Coast and recovering from an unpleasant hardware crash.  Meanwhile, we're evolving our newsletter & online event submission format, so events will get posted on our site sooner, daily.  Stay tuned for shorter, twice-monthly newsletters ( 1st & 15th of the month) and some new community features. We welcome all suggestions!

August has been chock full of fun. There's still room to register for the Kiteboard Clinics 8/19, the Log Shop Surf Contest 8/19, and also the Surf Swap Meet 8/27 for sellers....This weekend was packed with the Mavericks DVD release party, the Quiksilver debut of two surf films,  Shimmer (reportedly one of the best women's footage thus far) & First Chapter, plus Laird Hamilton launching his fragrance at Macy's on Saturday.

We're definitely salivating for more full moon surfing, the start of the Indian Summer, and some road tripping!  Brazil is also in the plans....Read on below.

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Santa Cruz resident PHIL MATTHEWS has been surfing for over 40 years (and still owns his first board, which is now a wall hanger), and has been taking pictures with Pentax cameras for just as long.  When not running his painting business, he enjoys taking sunrise and sunset photos the most, but also shoots a wide variety of subjects, from surf action to weddings.  For his mailing list subscribers, he emails his “Pic of the Day” every morning to about 400 people around the world.

A beloved character in Santa Cruz, Phil is also the club photographer for the Big Stick Surfing Association, where you can often see more his work. Phil is also very active in the surf community as Vice-President of the  Pleasure Point Night Fighters, a social club that has been preserving and protecting the surf community since its founding in 1919.   For photo shoot inquiries, you can reach Phil at 831.295.0664.

WET MAGAZINE for WOMEN SURFERS DEBUTS

WET's publisher/editor Ben Marcus & Surfer Mag Art Director Joni Casimiro have released their first issue of WET Magazine, the Quality Quarterly for All Women Surfers... which fills the void left by two major women's mags that have ceased to publish...."The crossword puzzle about Chelsea Georgeson has a mistake -- the 2 Down answer needs an extra box," groaned  Marcus. "We blew it. The proof reader has been sacked." Despite that, the premiere issue of WET is chockablock with all the color, action and adventure of women's surfing in the 21st Century. Of Nor Cal interest is an interview with Billabong XXL winner Jamilah Star, done just after she won $5000 for charging Waimea Bay and Mavericks during the winter of 2005/2006.  Subscriptions are $8.  Issues are not in stores yet, but can be purchased directly here or at the Pacifica Swap Meet 8/27 at check-in.  Read the press release.

TANDEM WIRE

Congratulations go out to BluEmursion founder and shortboarder Liz Hess, who recently got engaged.  Others recently engaged includes another well-known Santa Cruz longboarder/Paradise team rider (we're not naming names here) and also Pacifica surfer Jon Campo...

FORMER DAVENPORT CASH STORE RE-OPENS THIS MONTH

About The Cash Store...The Davenport Cash Store re-open around August 28 under new management as the the Davenport Roadhouse at the Cash Store.  This favorite food stop for 35 years was fully renovated by a group that includes Santa Cruz locals and surfer Jesse Katz.  The restaurant will offer an affordable menu that takes advantage of local, organic  & artisan ingredients.  Some of the offerings include pan breads featuring the freshest locally grown toppings such as the Nuevo Mexico (wood roasted chicken, chile rajas, corn topped with queso Oaxaca) of the classic Margherita (farm fresh tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, and basil from their own natural garden) or the Hanger steak with garlic fries -- all prepared in the wood-burning oven. Stone fireplaces, more outdoor patio dining, and a schedule of events featuring local artists, musicians and excursions are expected to draw locals and tourists alike. Lodging-wise, its 12 rooms and massage therapy offerings -- now the Davenport Inn -- are also being updated and an Esalen-influenced spa will be installed in the future.   It's all very timely-- Devil's Slide re-opened ahead of schedule and the Roadhouse will benefit from the new coastal trail system and campsite facilities that'll be developed, thanks to the recent donation of the large, 5-mile Coast Dairies parcel to the state for public use.

EPOXY BOARD COMPETITION HEATS UP - Surftech Demo Centers

Surftech recently updated their website and have set up Authorized Demo Centers where surfers can demo the full line of Tuflite demo boards with a small rental fee, which applies towards your purchase of a new Tuflite board.   Current local centers are Freeline Design, 821 41st Ave in Santa Cruz (831-476-2950) and Wise Surfboards at 800 Great Highway, San Francisco (415-750-9473)...

BOARDWORKS DEMO DAY - at Pacifica Surf Swap Meet, Aug 27

Meanwhile, another epoxy board maker, Boardworks, who produces boards for shapers like Steve Walden and Ben Aipa will be offering a Demo Day in its tent at our Surf Swap Meet Pacifica, Sunday 8/27 at the Log Shop's side lot.  So, visitors can test ride both Boardworks and Cobalt Surfboards' epoxy shapes by Bob Miller.  The seller registrations in and we're still taking registrations from individuals with used gear and businesses seeking booths.  MUSIC & ART UPDATE - In lieu of a DJ, we have Scotty Correa-Mickel & Santa Cruz band, Cruzin...The highly talented surf artist whom Quiksilver discovered here last year, Casey O'Connell, will be exhibiting, too. The Togo's Summer Surf Art Tour will also be on hand. The van offering complimentary sandwiches and a cool art exhibit of renowned artist Drew Brophy.

LOCALS IN THE MEDIA

o In the recent Chronicle interview on Laird Hamilton, it notes that surfing's alpha male born was in San Francisco in 1964 and that he always says "if everyone just scared themselves once a day, the world would be a better place."  Laird was in town this past Saturday at  Macy's to promote the men's fragrance, Davidoff Cool Water, for which he's the new face.  (So, then, by wearing his fragrance, might the world smell better? Laird doesn't strike us as the cologne-wearing type...But perhaps they passed on the lucrative opportunity to bottle his sweat...)

o Nissan's Show Us Your X Campaign - (pictured right) If you've seen all those Donavon Frankenreiter surf ads for Nissan Xterra everywhere online and in mags like Surfer & Triathlete, the other surfers are locals Claudine Solin, the threadless Brad Goya, and Aqua's Silvin Morgan of Greenbrew Skateboards.  Waterphile Suzanne Stack's agency did the real people casting call.

o The Maverick's 2006 Contest DVD Release party with the Mermen was packed last Saturday night at the Independent.  Read a 2007 contest update and the potential for  big-screen viewing events to alleviate the crowd congestion.

o Chronicle Mag recently featured Doc Rennaker & John Raymond on their surfing  adventures at the infamous Potato Patch off the Marin Headlands.  Peruse it here...

o Matt Warshaw's newest book, Photo/Stoner, on Surfer's legendary photographer Ron Stoner (who mysteriously disappeared)  will be released this fall. He recently penned a piece on it in Stellar Magazine, as well as a piece on Ronnie Burns.

o Not quite local, but there's a good NY Times piece on the surf brand RUCA Clothing, their phenomenal growth & their cult status.
