Almost Summer -- The Music Issue |  June 20

Ah, the summer solstice is tomorrow, Wednesday, June 21st.  With the onset of summer, our surf community truly comes to life.  Even the Great Highway residents are staging their first grassroots street fair on June 24th. This issue covers a packed calendar slew of upcoming surf music performances, classes, art and food events..  By the way,  if you're a surfing musiciancontact us and so we can share your schedule of local gigs and news of new releases in future issues.

June 21 is also the 2nd Annual International Surfing Day, as christened by Surfing Magazine and Surfrider Foundation.  Celebrate our sport with your local Surfrider Chapter by partaking in a beach cleanup, a paddle, and other festivities listed below.   At minimum, enjoy the three swells in the water and pick up a few pieces of trash before you get in.  A small effort, if done by many on a regular basis, can make a big difference.

A quick story of good karma -- while I was checking the surf last May above the Hook during a long flat spell, I was surprised to see burly, tattooed Santa Cruz surfer picking up trash and cigarette butts around the overlook area, using an EZ grabber tool.  After I lauded his efforts, he said he did that regularly to ensure that we had waves to surf.  And, of course, at the next dawn patrol,  some fun, surfable waves materialized.

SWELL PIC | BEHIND THE LENS

Point of View Icon"As usual, the 2006 Memorial Day contest lacked good waves, which made the luck of the draw the determining factor of who won.  If there are a few set waves in a heat, contestants can show off their skills. If there are no waves, it can be hard for judges and spectators to tell who is better than the other. As the club photographer for the Big Stick Surfing Association in Santa Cruz, I can say that Chris Radich (senior women’s division winner) and Anthony Daddario (men’s division finalist) surfed well for the club.  In general, no matter how well you know the Lane, this contest is always challenging, thanks to the depth of talent and the options for optimal wave selection. ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Santa Cruz resident PHIL MATTHEWS has been surfing for over 40 years (and still owns his first board, now a wall hanger), and has been taking pictures with Pentax cameras for just as long.  When not running his painting business, he enjoys taking sunrise and sunset photos the most, but also shoots a wide variety of subjects, from surf action to weddings.  For his mailing list subscribers, he emails his “Pic of the Day” every morning to about 160 people around the world.

A beloved character in Santa Cruz, Phil is also the club photographer for the Big Stick Surfing Association, where you can often see more his work. Phil is also very active in the surf community as Vice-President of the  Pleasure Point Night Fighters, a social club that has been preserving and protecting the surf community since its founding in 1919.

PACIFICA/ HALF MOON BAY BUZZ
Pacifica has announced the new schedule for the Pacifica Summer Surf Series, which are listed below in the Surf Contest Calendar area...By the way, the Pacifica skatepark did re-open a week after the motor oil vandalism...On the rumor mill front, we recently heard about a local Bay Area thirty-something shortboard shaper getting into a physical fight with a local high school male longboarder at Linda Mar (names unmentioned) and the cops were called...On the Half Moon Bay front, Darryl from HMB Surf Shop said that "while business is slow, the breaks here are pretty empty...it's like the 70s again...come out and surf!."  HMB Surf Shop also confirmed that its annual HMB Classic surf contest will NOT take place this year, but resume next year.

UPCOMING SUMMER SURF GEAR SWAP MEETS
The used surfboard market seems to be busy again, according to shop owners...perhaps because it's surfable again and weather's more pleasant.  Keep these dates in mind...Saturday July 15 in San Francisco is the Aqua Surf Shop swap meet in their lot.  We at Zuna Surf (with Stef Phillips) are co-hosting one with Paradise Surf Shop on Saturday July 22 in Santa Cruz, and one with the Log Shop tentatively on Sunday August 27 in Pacifica.  Vendor booths will be available for the latter two.  Check back on our site for more details soon.

LOCALS IN THE MEDIA

Longtime Ano Nuevo local surfer /Waddell kiteboarder Gary Strachan, aka "the Warden," was recently profiled by Christian Beamish in the latest issue of Surfer's Journal. It's a good glimpse of the California State Park Ranger's life as a waterman,   his efforts to open up a marine education center at Ano Nuevo State Reserve, and his work on preserving the open coastal lands between Santa Cruz and San Francisco that managed by the Peninsula Open Space Trust.

Good Strachan article quotes for thought: "We as a community have an opportunity to affect the way a place will be...Surfing [as community & more] is an important one for its political potential to keep public lands open and sufficiently funded."

June JettyGirl cover - Julie CoxWell, Santa Cruz longboard pros, Julie Cox and Ashley Lloyd, are jetting off to Biarritz, France shortly for the Roxy Pro Women's Longboard Championships, July 3-9, and both continue to make headlines.  Julie, the women's winner of recent SCLU Memorial Day invitational at Steamers, is this month's JettyGirl, where she's interviewed in depth. The two are also in this month's  Longboard Magazine, documenting their surfari to New Zealand, and Ashley's Taiwan surf escapade.

mark massaramonterey coast | victory

Last week, when the Pebble Beach Company withdrew its Clint Eastwood-backed development proposal on the day before the California Coastal Commission was to vote on the plan, surfing's most active environmentalist, Mark Massara, declared a tremendous VICTORY for coastal protection. Mark extends a huge thanks all of you who participated in the Sierra Club's Great Coastal Places Campaign by writing letters and more to help stop the Pebble Beach Company's from cutting 17,000 trees in the largest remaining coastal Monterey pine forest to make way for yet another golf course, more hotels and large homes.

If you are interested in learning more about Mark's efforts to protect clean surf, public access and coastal views that make California such a special place to live, visit his Coast Places site or join his email list.

laird hamilton's paddle missionfilm fundraiser |  report

WWe last wrote that Laird Hamilton was doing a 426km London-to-Paris crossing by bike and standup paddling -- all to raise funds for the final production of the autism film Beautiful Son,  shot by San Francisco filmmaker Charlotte Lagarde, (of Rell Sunn documentary fame), and Don King, the Hawaiian cinematographer (Riding Giants, Lost TV). According to LaGarde, Laird completed the crossing in two days.  Interestingly, he uses a custom Surftech paddle board for the journey.

The filmmakers are almost done with production, but are looking to raise a final $100K.  For tax-deductible donations or to purchase rashguards autographed by Laird Hamilton, visit at www.beautifulson.com View the latest trailer here with music by Coldplay and check out photos of Laird.

If you missed the Thursday 6.15 opening, this show runs through Fri, July 14///Well-known SF curator Paule Anglim spotlights three esteemed young contemporary artists: Rigo 04 (aka Ricardo Gouveai, the Madeira transplant known for his SOMA murals), Barry McGee (aka Twist, who is showing under the name Robert Pimple) and Clare Rojas (aka acoustic music artist Peggy Honeywell). The exhibition features new paintings and mixed-media by Rigo, and collaborative mixed-media installations by the Bay Area's McGee and Rojas. (McGee, well-known in skate & surf circles, was last in the media about the Adidas shoe bearing his Ray Fong character.)

"McGee and Rojas offer their unique urban perspectives in complementary but distinctly different presentations. Known individually for their skilled application of almost childlike aesthetics in addressing social ills, they work together here, using humor and craftsmanship to create a visually engaging environment that merges fairy tale with cultural exposé." -Marin Magazine.

If you're a big McGee fan, catch a site-specific work of his in the seminal SF Art Institute's alumni show at the SFAI Walter and McBean Gallery on 800 Chestnut St. Show runs through July 29.  Or check out Books on Barry McGee.
