Teahupoo is one of my favorite places to shoot in the lineup due to warm water, perfect visibility, and consistent hollow barrels. On this beautiful, sun-drenched morning, Mick took off on a wave that would have required me to swim hard back to get an in-the-barrel-shot. So, instead, I swam down about 15 feet to the coral, and shot skywards as the wave passed by with Mick flying through the tube. - paul javier

I'll never forget this day...I was on a boat skimming across the deep blue waters off Oahu's West coast, having just swum with spinner dolphins.  A huge whale breached about one hundred yards away from our boat. We quickly followed it and stopped within 50 feet to put a microphone in the water.  As the whale sang through the ship's speakers, I pulled out my Canon 1D Mark II and snapped a few frames of the ephemeral dark blue ripples created by the whale's rich, resonating narrative. - paul javier

PAUL JAVIER is a freelance photographer who regularly contributes to surfing and kiteboarding publications. An avid surfer,  water polo player, and realtor specializing in oceanfront properties, Paul resides in Pacifica with his dog, Snowy, when not traveling abroad.  His recent work has covered diverse subjects from Nigerian Touareg nomadic families living in the Sahara to great white sharks breaching off South Africa and the Athens Olympics 2004.

Paul’s greatest passion, though, is shooting surf and water photography.  View some of his work at www.pauljavier.com and at the Coastline Spring Fashion Show  on Friday April 7 in Santa Cruz.

Note:  The Teahupoo photo above right denotes only one thing --survival.  The reassuring light and calm that ensues after a pounding set comes through is one of the most beautiful things to see underwater at this Tahitian break.  A huge set will typically send surfers and water photographers scrambling to get under the wave.  When duckdiving under a stormy foamball, there is often with only a couple of feet between the wave and reef to squeeze through. My camera housing is barely visible in my right hand. This photo was taken 2 years ago by the greatly missed Jon Mozo (who sadly passed away after getting slammed on the reef during a 2005 Pipeline shoot) while we were both photographing surfers at Teahupoo.

Crossfit Santa Cruz (plus locations elsewhere)

2851 Research Park Dr., Unit B
Soquel, CA 95073.  Tel:  831-476-2696

How do you stay fit efficiently when it’s hard to get in the water?  Interval training.  We recently tried out a CrossFit class, one of the fastest growing gym programs, founded by Santa Cruz’s Greg Glassman.  The Crossfit program is essentially the same principal strength and conditioning program for police academies, the military, and elite athletes.

In our first 45-minute class with trainer Eva Twardokens, a Santa Cruz surfer and Olympic ski veteran, we warmed with rowing on the ergs and dove into rapid-fire, 30-second-Tabatta sets of squats.  (Tabatta time clock-style-drills on the bike, noted Eva, helped the ‘96 Olympic speed skating team increase their average V02 max by 20%.) We then went through Olympic weightlifting bar drills and finished off with a circuit of medicine ball toss n’ run laps mixed with lifting exercises. Overall, it was a good workout and fun.  What we loved was the variety and how short it was.

According to Eva, “Crossfit is minimalist program, which is reflected by the functionality and basic-ness of its exercises, as well as the simplicity of the equipment compared to most commercial gyms. An Olympic weight set and a place to do pull-ups and dips is all you need to do CrossFit.  But we like to add gymnastics rings and parallelette bars, plyometric boxes, a Dynamax medicine ball, dumbbells, kettlebells, climbing rope, Concept II Rower, and a glute-ham developer – gear anyone can add if they want to train CrossFit-style at home.”

The Crossfit regimen is a fitness program suitable for anyone, as the same routines are used for elderly individuals with heart disease to cage fighters. The only difference is that how they scale load and intensity.

“I wish I had the Crossfit knowledge when I was training for Olympic Games,” said Eva. “Instead of 3-hour-a-day endurance workouts, training is fun, efficient, and effective.  The variety and intensity makes it never boring. I only spend 4-5 days a week -- no more than an hour per day --, so as a surfer, you have time to go surf or do other things. While you do build stamina, the key is that these short, high intensity circuit workouts seem to induce the body’s production of human growth hormone.  For example, we have a 76-year-old female client who couldn’t pick up her granddaughter due to osteoporosis.  After some Crossfit training, she had no trouble, and even got a young bone rating.”

So, check out CrossFit (www.crossfit.com) as a way to maintain general physical preparedness, avoid injury and be the best athlete you can be.   Gyms are located in Santa Cruz, San Francisco, San Jose and rapidly spring up elsewhere.  First class is free and tell then Zuna Surf sent you.
