En Route to Santa Cruz Along The Montara Coast

  California Dreamin'

This newsletter is on the shorter side...We are currently on an extended surfari down in South America, and miss the California Pacific coast...With Cosco Busan memories still fresh, we're bummed that we missed the "Kill the Drill" rally & live concert today at UCSF during the Salazar public hearing

A fuller newsletter will be out next week, so send us your event submissions & news!  Hasta luego.

BEST WEEKEND BETS ...

While you get your fill of this incoming NW swell this weekend, don't forget to celebrate Earth Day.  For even more April events, visit the Zuna Swell Events Calendar.  Here are THREE noteworthy ones we suggest:

(1) The California Surf Project:  Book Release Party -- April 18, 22, 23

Meet the authors + booksigning, artwork & slideshow

Quit your job, pack your boards, and surf your way down the California coast...Sound like a daydream?

Meet Chris Burkard and Eric Soderquist, the authors of The California Surf Project, who did just that.  Their new book is a fully-illustrated travel diary of their trip of a lifetime as they cajoled their Volkswagen bus along Highway 1 from the Oregon border to the Tijuana Sloughs and discovered everything the Golden State's legendary coastline has to offer.

Come out Saturday, April 18th for their official book release party and book tour kickoff at Mollusk Surf Shop.  Santa Cruz stops are next week, April 22-23.   Hear their stories in person at local surf shops, see their slideshow & artwork, and relive their incredible two-month adventure of surfing perfect waves, sharing campfires with total strangers, and keeping their VW bus running with duct tape and prayers.   Check here for other stops in San Luis Obispo and elsewhere in Central & Southern California.

Chris Burkard is a Shell Beach, California resident and Surfline's senior staff photographer.  His photography work has also been published in Surfer, Surfing, and numerous other international publications.  See Chris's recent interview here from "Club of the Waves."  Eric Soderquist is Hurley team rider and prolific artist who resides in Arroyo Grande, California.

Thanks to an advanced copy courtesy of Chronicle Books, our Zuna editors all agree that this is a must-have addition for your surf library.  This book beautifully captures all the natural beauty that we’re very fortunate to enjoy as California surfers.  You’ll relish the 200 gorgeous photographs and soulful text, plus the bonus thirty-minute DVD that comes included.  It lists for $35.  Buy it for $23.10 at Amazon.

where:
Mollusk Surf Shop,  4500 Irving St at 46th Ave,  SAN FRANCISCO

more: Danielle Rubi's blog

Mollusk Surf Shop Gallery showcases new photographs from the talented Danielle Rubi: Invisible Thread.  See this San Francisco/Santa Barbara resident's newest show, and enjoy live music by Rubies and hors d'oeuvres by Miel Cooking.  This is her going-away bash before moving to Paris.

In Invisible Thread, Rubi confronts the variety of her cast of subjects head on through the imposition of technical and compositional parameters.  The criteria are simple: all images in the group were shot on her favorite camera, a 1950, square format Rolleiflex and are all printed the same size; also, every image contains a strong horizontal line across the frame.  Displayed, the images are justified according to their individual horizon line, rather than the top, bottom, or center of the frame.  The effect of these parameters simplifies and connects a seemingly disparate group of images, in effort to show their common provenance: Rubi's eye.  Another notion that emerged from this specific undertaking is the significance of horizons in the way we process, regard, and experience the world.  It is how we arrange our written language, it is how we show chronologies, it is what happens when two arms reach for each other, it is what infinity looks like.
