This is a long newsletter, but we are working on revamping our format, so stay tuned!

Surfari Radar....While we've had a nice recent run of warm weather and spotty swells of late, friends in warm Central American waters -- especially in Nicaragua -- claim they've had the best season in a long time for consistent, head high waves.  Others undeterred by the media's swine-flu blitz have scored very empty, tasty waves in Cabo and elsewhere in Mex.  Check out some current surf travel deals in our Surfari Radar section...

Ultimate Surfpads -- After seeing the film, Food, Inc., which exposed the underbelly of American agribusiness and how your food is produced, the  talk among our circles for the "ultimate surfpad" is to be able to grow your own food...With that note, we debut our new "Ultimate Surfpads" section below to share ideas on a surf house designs and to keep you up on the coastal real estate market.

July Events -- It's a month full of great art exhibits from local surfers.  Don't miss the SFMOMA's Artist Gallery debut of "Pipeline:  Art, Surfing & the Environment"  and more.  And, what better way to enjoy a summer evening than with two outdoor surf film screenings at Aqua and O'neill Surf Shop on July 30.  See more events, plus O'Neill's free skin cancer testing, the live surf "duel" of Occy vs Curren, and the Point Mugu contest with Slater in our Swell Events calendar & surf contest list.

Looking ahead, Mayor Newsom's free Sunday Streets San Francisco festivities has two dates happening along Ocean Beach this August 9 and Sept 6.  If you are a surf organization, yoga instructor or merchant who wants to partake in these free outdoor festivals that showcase neighborhood activities & resources, contact Susan & the organizers here.

Check out more Campbell films here.  And stay tuned for news on the new Dear & Yonder film by his wife Tiffany Campbell & Andria Lessler, which has been currently touring internationally in Bali and the Biarritz.

The fast growing, invasive kelp that you've seen recently taking over many surf spots from LA to Santa Cruz and San Francisco can grow an inch a day, according to recent media reports.  NOAA used to fund divers to yank the kelp out, but now with funding gone and only weak winter storms last year, it has made surfing a challenge, and water officials concerned.  Santa Cruz surfers and others have been organizing their own kelp cutting parties of late...

Ford Collection, Colin Gift, Terry Hoff, Dale Hope/Kahala, Max Lawrence, Ian MacLean, Reuben Margolin, Serena Mitnik-Miller, Linny Morris, Adrienne Keahi Pao, Christophe Piallat, Frank Quirarte, Don Ross, and Charles Valoroso.

Exhibition Highlights

Charlie Callahan’s paintings reverse the typical roles in which nature and humans are cast. His vivid, large-scale works painted on beach debris, imagine humans as victims consumed by sea predators.

Reuben Margolin looks closely at water, observes its dynamics, and translates it into handcrafted forms using salvaged materials. The resulting kinetic sculptures are moving tributes to the unseen forces that move water.

Adrienne Pao
’s series of color photographs evoke travel posters that have attracted tourists to the Hawaiian Islands since the advent of jet travel. Beachfront Property at Diamond Head/Lei’ahi Kapa depicts the Waikiki shoreline of today, overrun with tourists and encroached upon by concrete high rises. Pao re-frames the visitor experience and calls into question the practice of exoticizing other cultures, the natural environment, and women.

Charles Valoroso
grew up surfing Kalapaki on the island of Kauai. He is noted as the first artist to pay homage to the Aloha shirt in a series of large-scale oil paintings. His work has been translated into textiles for the Kahala shirt line. For the exhibition he will present an installation piece that includes paintings of the ocean that verge on the abstract and as well as works from his Bikini Atoll series.

Linny Morris
photographed environmental issues such as the struggle to preserve Midway Atoll and its wildlife. She also made photographs of the world that exists below the surface of the water. Her appreciation of the ocean and her eye for abstraction are showcased in the exhibition.

Peter Shepard Cole
’s realist works evoke the early period of Hawaiian contact with the West. His references are haunting; there are native women donned in layers of Victorian garb and hand-to-hand combatants. In the painting, Self-Portrait as Captain Cook, Cole imagines himself in the vulnerable position of the man who opened the door to the transformation of Hawaii and paid a high price for it.
