COUNTDOWN TO SUMMER...

While out of the country, we were bummed about missing the May "Sacred Craft" Consumer Surfboard Expo, but its fall expo is set for October 10-11 in Del Mar.  Anyway, it's nice to be back home in the SF Bay Area, with summer officially only a few weeks away...

June marks two big days -- Sunday, June 8 is World Oceans Day, and Saturday June 20 is International Surfing Day (ISD) and its 5th year anniversary.  So go out and savor a great surf session, and take a moment to clean your local beach. Better yet, get more involved with a great ocean non-profit.  We hope you'll especially partake Project Kaisei's World Oceans Day GLOBAL cleanup challenge on Sunday, June 7

June is also our favorite time to combine surf excursions with classic California activities, like taking a short hike into Muir Woods after a Bolinas surf day to quaff some tasty German bier on tap at the sunny Alpine chalet known as Nature Friends' Tourist Club (aka the German Tourist Club)...or picking your own fruit for making pies and home-made jams.  After surfing Santa Cruz's Eastside or other spots near Monterey, we recommend heading over Hwy 129 to Gilroy's Buckley Farms to pick Bing and Rainier cherries right off the trees.  Or, just head down Hwy 1 to Watsonville's Gizdich Ranch for their famed "pik-yor-sef" strawberries, olallieberries and boysenberries.  If you're surfing up near Waddell and Davenport, end your day with a U-pick session at Swanton Berry Farm for tasty organic strawberries and olallieberries.  Our only advice, though, per the farmers themselves,  is to wait another week or so for the fruit to ripen, they need a bit more warm sunning...

So, below, in our June Swell Events calendar, spend this month enjoying a ton of  fun Ocean celebration events, from Dick Dale and paddleboard races to the first annual Half Moon Bay Big Wave Film Festival and more.

Don't miss seeing the live webcasts of the top groms competing, namely Pacifica's Brogie Panesi (left) at the upcoming NSSA National Championships June 17-27...Also keep an eye out for the Partridge girls and other top women surfers in a summer Vanity Fair issue.

Saludos,

- Monica & the Zuna Surf crew

NEW SURF GEAR:  Indestructible Board Bags
Hate worrying about getting your beloved board damaged in transport? Jaded with the board-packing hassle and the excess weight? Now, there is a smart alternative to the classic foam-padded travelbag -- the inflatable SOMA AIRBAG. Made with tough polyester & PVC, the Airbag's raft-like air compartments and patented rocker design will seriously protect your board from snaps, dings, and flexing. Check out their video testing its indestructability.  The Airbag's also lightweight and storable in a small sac. Priced reasonably at $150-$200, the goods start shipping end of this month from retailers and their online site.  Stay tuned for our full test drive of the Airbag!

WHO'S WHO IN VANITY FAIR
Santa Cruz's Partridge twins, Sierra and Hailey, whose sponsors include O'Neill and BettyBelts, were in Southern California recently to participate in a Vanity Fair photo shoot covering the “next wave” of young female surfing talent.  Look for spread in an upcoming issue, which also should feature Alana Blanchard, Malia Manuel, Sophia Mulanovich, Coco Ho and other ASP pros.  Read a bit of the Vanity Fair backstory in photographer David Pu's blog, which, by the way, is always a great read, not to mention his wonderful photos.

PLEASURE POINT UPDATES:
The multi-million dollar seawall construction along Santa Cruz's Eastside surf spots began a few weeks ago.  Car drivers who enjoy doing a Pleasure Point-to-the-Hook surf check along East Cliff Drive should take note that the coastal road is closed between 32nd and 36th Avenue.  The signs will have you make a short inland detour...On a different note, if you missed Big Stick's vintage contest, here are the Logjam Results.
