Time and time again, it's always great to see the Bay Area activism that we as surfers can initiate.  For example, today at 8:30pm is Earth Hour, a time to switch off your lights for one hour and "vote for Earth" (versus supporting Global Warming).  Its predecessor, "Lights Out San Francisco" was launched last year by local surfer and Google PR guy Nate Tyler,  modeled after Sydney's Lights Out effort.  With that said, stay tuned in our mid-April newsletter about Surfrider's new offshore drilling response and Save The Waves' May benefit bash...

GOOD WEEKEND BETS ...
So, this last weekend in March is full of great films, a Hotline swap meet with a  Flea Virostko appearance,  and the start of the waiting period for the Women's Pipeline Contest...Here are some brief film updates.

Tonight, Friday 3/27, swing by Mollusk Surf Shop's  "YAR" art show/reception featuring art from The Present, from 7pm-9pm. Musical guest Tommy Guerrero performs.

Tickets for this Saturday's 3/27 San Fran screenings are selling briskly. Buy tickets online or at Mollusk.
For Santa Cruzans, the film's new screening date at the Rio is Friday, May 22 at 7 and 9pm, coinciding nicely with SCLU's Memorial Day Weekend contest at Steamer Lane.

"Point Break LIVE!" continues at San Francisco's CELLSpace on Friday nights. Called "Hilarious" by VARIETY.com, "Point Break LIVE!" tells the story of former College-football-star-turned-FBI-agent, Johnny Utah, in pursuit of the surfing, bank robbing, skydiving, bare-hand-fighting adrenaline-junkie-cum-Zen-master Bodhi Sattva.

Described by Australia's POPMAG.com, as "a cross between reality TV, a play, and all-time classic film 'Point Break,' every show features a new unrehearsed actor (selected from the audience), playing 'Johnny Utah' with the lines read off cue-cards so as to capture Keanu Reeves raw acting talent."  "'Point Break LIVE!' turns out to be a wild ride," and for some, the 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' for our generation."

BETWEEN THE LINES,  which recently won "Best Documentary" award winner at the January 2009 X-Dance Film Festival, explores the Vietnam War through the prism of the surfing sub-culture. Narrated by acclaimed writer-director JOHN MILIUS (Apocalypse Now, Big Wednesday), this documentary film offers unique insight into the dramatic effect that the Vietnam War and draft had on young American men who rode waves.

BETWEEN THE LINES delves into the lives of two surfers who chose opposite paths, Pat Farley and Brant Page. Pat Farley, a heavy combat vet and Santa Cruz icon who authored Surfing to Saigon, volunteered for service in Vietnam and was discharged with a full psychiatric pension. Conversely, Brant Page evaded the draft and fled to the surf rich Hawaiian Islands where he was unceasingly pursued and eventually arrested by the FBI. Pat Farley will be on hand to field audience questions.
