"Balsa Wave Farmer" by artist Brown Cannon

We're still down here in "SudAmerica" here and have had plenty of fun surfing some sizeable, overhead++ Atlantic swells.  It's been nice to surf nearly empty breaks most of the time, but we've also experienced some "bazillions of Brazilians" sessions, too.

May is one of our favorite months of the year, when the SW swells really come alive, the surf event scene gets humming, and when all Memorial Day surf shop sales plus SCLU's Memorial Weekend Invitational happen.  Below, checkout new surf book releases from Robert "Wingnut" Weaver, Jaimal Yogis and others, and Surfrider SC's great shark talk.

And don't miss all the film screenings this month -- "The Women and the Waves," "Out of the Blue," and "The Present," -- featuring Danny Hess and many Santa Cruz icons, including Michel Junod, Zeuf Hesson, Ashley Lloyd, Jenny Useldinger, the original Santa Cruz Surfing Club, and more.

A smattering of local snippets, bargains & tips...Got a sale to announced?  Email it over!

The seawall construction should be starting any day now and run throughout the upcoming summer, fall, and winter seasons.  Per Santa Cruz Surfrider, it won't be so easy to surf the Point while this sea wall project is working, and general construction noise and congestion and debris will undoubtedly make surfing the near shore breaks a more nerve-rattling experience.  Word also has it that many of the surf contests will be impacted.

About Saltwater Buddha
(List $14.95 | $10.17 at Amazon)
Fed up with suburban teenage life, Jaimal Yogis ran off to Hawaii with little more than a copy of Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha and enough cash for a surfboard. His journey is a coming-of-age saga that takes him from communes to monasteries and the icy New York shore. Equal parts spiritual memoir and surfer's tale, this is a chronicle of finding meditative focus in the barrel of a wave and eternal truth in the great salty blue.  See reviews here.   See more California book tour dates here.

An avid surfer and global travel, Jaimal Yogis is an award-winning journalist  whohas written for numerous publications, including: The Washington Post The Surfer’s Journal, Transworld Surf, and San Francisco Magazine.

Synopsis:  In the late 1930's the sport of surfing finally arrived to stay in Northern California when a small group of Los Angeles surfers in college in San Jose began to venture over to the coast and surf the frigid waters along Santa Cruz. The local kids soon became inspired to take up the sport for themselves with no formal instruction, making their own equipment and banding together to help each other along and overcome the elements. Eventually, more of the town's youth would join in and The Santa Cruz Surfing Club was formed, complete with a boardhouse and clubhouse that became the center of the social scene on the beach until World War II changed their lives and brought a sudden end to a memorable era in California's history.
