SALTWATER BUDDHA - Book
BENEFIT at the Riptide
| San Francisco

Come out for a special Wet Wednesday at the Riptide -- It's a Surfrider
San Francisco fundraiser that celebrates the release of Jaimal Yogis’ new book,
Saltwater Buddha: A Surfer's Quest to Find Zen on the Sea,
plus
Roberto Vezzone’s local surf films, and other local art.
A Danny Hess
6'3" surfboard and books will be raffled off.
About
Saltwater Buddha
(List $14.95 |
$10.17 at Amazon)
Fed up with
suburban teenage life, Jaimal Yogis ran off to Hawaii with little more than a copy of Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha and enough cash for a surfboard. His
journey is a coming-of-age saga that takes him from communes to monasteries
and the icy New York shore. Equal parts spiritual memoir and surfer's tale,
this is a chronicle of finding meditative focus in the barrel of a wave and
eternal truth in the great salty blue. See reviews
here.

"Out
of the Blue" - a Santa Cruz Surfing Club documentary
| Santa Cruz
This
historical documentary, directed by local Santa Cruz filmmaker Chris
Thompson, originally debuted at the PacificRim Film Festival...It
features archival footage and interviews with the original Santa Cruz
Surfing Club members.
Film length: 56
mins.
Synopsis: In the
late 1930's the sport of surfing finally arrived to stay in Northern
California when a small group of Los Angeles surfers in college in San Jose
began to venture over to the coast and surf the frigid waters along Santa
Cruz. The local kids soon became inspired to take up the sport for
themselves with no formal instruction, making their own equipment and
banding together to help each other along and overcome the elements.
Eventually, more of the town's youth would join in and The Santa Cruz
Surfing Club was formed, complete with a boardhouse and clubhouse that
became the center of the social scene on the beach until World War II
changed their lives and brought a sudden end to a memorable era in
California's history. |
