Free as a Dog— A True Dog’s Tale is a new Billabong film starring Joel "Parko" Parkinson and his faithful hound, Trey.  This film showcases Parko at his home turf, Coolangatta, the Queensland Australian town know for "The Superbank", a man-made beach that creates perfect, long, peeling waves. This is Jack McCoy's 24th film and its DVD release in October 2006. The festival also will screen some monster big-wave surfing from the 2005 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards and the winning entry from the Panasonic Surfshorts Competition.

9:15pm.  Save the Waves' film, Lost Jewel of the Atlantic, debuts at the Santa Cruz Film Festival. This one-hour film chronicles the discovery of Europe's best big-wave destination on the island of Madeira, and the subsequent battle to save its surf from greedy developers and a corrupt government.

The prolific, sharp-tongued surf writer Ben Marcus, a Santa Cruz native now living in Malibu, will read from the new surf book, "Surfing's Greatest Misadventures."  Edited by Seattle writer, editor and surfer Paul Diamond, the book is a collection of 30 stories of big waves, shark attacks, tsunamis, sinking surf boats, killer wipeouts and comical pranks, illuminating "the less enchanting aspects of a life committed to surf," according to Diamond.  (source: Santa Cruz Sentinel).
