A Little Cover-Up during the Uncle Dick's Contest |
Pacifica, CA
|
|
Mavericks Contest is ON! for this Saturday, Feb 13 |
 |
|
As you've probably already heard, the Mavs
contest is on with an 8am start. According to Darren
Brilhart, the contestants' liaison, the swell should peak in
mid-morning and hold through the day....waves with 30- to
40-foot faces are expected to roll through the break. Check out
the
heats here.
Per Bruce Jenkins'
SF Chronicle article
on the event, it's likely to quite a heavy day at Mavericks.
Given the winter erosion and the area's eco-fragility,
spectators are encouraged to watch webcast online at
www.maverickssurf.com
or on Facebook
www.facebook.com/mavericks.
If
you do go, pack your bike in your car! |

MEMORIAL TRIBUTE:
Phil Matthews | Sat Feb 13 |
|
According
to his wife K'lyn, this month's Valentine Massacre surf contest in
Santa Cruz will be postponed in honor of Phil Matthews' passing. A
memorial celebration for Matthews will be held Saturday, February
13, at the
Rio Theatre, 9:30am to 12 noon. A
paddle-out will be scheduled later.
Everyone is invited to join family and friends. Phil’s photographs
include many local surfers, surf events, sunrises and sunsets. His
never-ending passion and love for Santa Cruz and the ocean made him
a familiar figure in the community. Slides of Phil and his works
will be displayed, stories will be told, and the Santa of Santa Cruz
will be fondly remembered. The paddle out will be announced later.
An Irish Wake follows after at The Point - Irish Wake. His ashes
will be scattered over Pleasure Point and the Rhode Island coast
where he first learned to surf.
As reported earlier, Pleasure Point surf icon Phil Matthews
passed away January 12 from a pulmonary embolism; he was 57 years
old. Matthews was instrumental in a resurgence of the Pleasure Point
Night Fighters, and fought for decades to protect his beloved surf
break with beach and graffiti clean-ups. He also helped organize
local surf contests, such as the BigStick LogJam and the annual St.
Valentine's Day Massacre.

UPDATE on SAVE SLOAT!
- Write Letters... |
|
Per Bill McLaughlin of SF Surfrider’s
Erosion Committee, "the city’s DPW has begun placing huge
boulders on the bluff at Sloat. The idea of using sand bags has
been dismissed. Re-using existing rubble seems also to have been
ruled out. A completely new rock revetment is going up.... It’s
a tragic scene – and it’s not just the new project going in. Due
to the recent erosion, there is more construction debris
unearthed down there than ever before. With this additional
section of boulders, we have essentially a complete armoring of
the entire area - a wall of concrete, rubble and stone
stretching all the way from 1st lot to the bluff."
"What you can do...Please continue to write letters to all
parties involved. At the very least, in the near term, we should
specifically call for the removal of old concrete debris as
mitigation, a pull back of the road and parking lots, and
restoration of natural dunes in the area."
Keep up on the issue here at
Surfrider SF's Sloat blog
