about Zen & Zero

VIEW THE TRAILER HERE.  Michael Ginthor's ZEN & ZERO is a Hunter Thompson-esque voyage from LA to Costa Rica that explores the dream of the classic surf trip, executed by generations of surfers since the Sixties. When five landlocked Austrians get on that very road to trace the footsteps of Allan Weisbecker's infamous Captain Zero,  their 7,000-mile surf pilgrimage turns into a metaphysical investigation of the myth of the surfer-dude, part comedy, part philosophical diversion.   Fueled by the promise of selling their used cars for twice their value at the end of the trip, the crew takes you through Mexico, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica to the legendary surf destination, Pavones, Weisbecker's home.  For more, visit www.zenandzero.com

Film length: 60 minutes.  Stars Allan Weisbecker, author of "In Search of Captain Zero" and "Cosmic Banditos." Written & directed by Michael Ginthor.

Original soundtrack by New World Revolution (Herwig Maurer). Salzburg native Herwig Maurer is founder of the alternative electro act, Mankind Liberation Front, and the man behind music projects Smack3000 and Infocalypse Inc., which have found their way into the charts of influential DJs like John Digweed and Carl Cox. Maurer has made production contributions to numerous major motion picture scores, indie films and television shows including Mel Gibson’s Passion Of The Christ, Apocalypto, Cradle 2 The Grave, C.S.I, and Spyder Games.  Zen & Zero was nominated for best original score at X-Dance 2006.

what they say about Zen & Zero...

“If you ever needed reassurance that the rebel heart of surfing is still beating strong under the slow strangulation of rampant mainstreaming, this film is for you.”

“Employing a hardboiled Hunter S. Thompson-esque narration style crossed with a driving, surf-meets-Spaghetti-Western soundtrack (masterfully scored by Herwig Maurer), this soulful 16mm film lets you ride shotgun on a 7,000-mile surfing pilgrimage, complete with flat tires, Federales and happy buzzards feasting on bloated roadkill.”
- Steve Barilotti – Surfer Magazine

“We are like sailors who unable to dismantle their ship in the safety of a dock must reconstruct it on the open sea.” Thus the philosopher Otto Neurath defines the existential premise of Zen and Zero, and from it this rather shabby but elegant noir opus sets its edge and glides languidly forward between a wave of innocent early 21st century longing and a reef of seasoned European nihilism.”
-
Drew Kampion – Surfer’s Path
